Washback to the learnerare exam preparation courses effective?

Abstract

Esta Tesis Doctoral analiza el posible efecto que el examen B2 First puede tener en estudiantes de inglés e intenta dar respuesta a tres preguntas de investigación. Primero, analiza el rendimiento en la prueba B2 First. Asimismo, considera el conocimiento lingüístico y habilidades en general. Por último, estudia la autonomía e independencia del alumnado gracias a la preparación para B2 First. Un total de 130 estudiantes, divididos en grupo de control y experimental, y 8 profesores participaron en el estudio. Tras analizar los resultados se ha llegado a estas conclusiones. Primero, los alumnos que asisten a cursos orientados al examen muestran un mejor rendimiento en B2 First. Segundo, los resultados de las pruebas independientes no muestran una mejora del conocimiento lingüístico y habilidades. Por último, la preparación para el examen influye parcialmente en la capacidad de los alumnos para mejorar su inglés y conocer sus fortalezas y debilidades. This PhD thesis analyses the potential washback on learners of the exam B2 First and aims to answer three research questions. First, this research project analyses the performance on B2 First. Second, it considers students’ language knowledge and abilities. Third, it looks at learner autonomy and independence. A total of 130 students, divided into experimental and control group, and 8 teachers have taken part in this study. In the light of the results obtained, the following conclusions can be drawn. First, students enrolled on more exam-oriented courses show a better performance on B2 First. Second, the results obtained on the independent tests do not show an improvement in language knowledge and abilities. Third, preparing for B2 First has a limited effect on students’ ability to know how to improve their English and on their awareness of their strengths and weaknesses.
