Abstract
The study of psychological characteristics of consumers and/or distributors of Internet child pornography is a scientific field of great interest in recent decades. This study examines differences in cognitive distortions and ways of coping of Internet child pornography consumers, sex offenders, non sex-offenders and control participants. One hundred and four men, aged from 15 to 68 years, filled both a questionnaire of Cognitive Distortions of child pornography, child sexual abuse and sexual aggression against adults and a brief form of coping questionnaire. We found that men consumers of Internet child pornography yielded 1) higher scores for cognitive distortions of child pornography and child sexual abuse 2) lower scores for cognitive distortions of sexual aggression against adults and 3) lower scores for cognitive escape and emotion focused coping strategies. Results suggest that Internet child pornography consumers differ from sex offenders and non sexoffenders inmates cognitively and emotionally. Future research, involving consumers, distributors and producers of Internet child pornography, is necessary to ascertain differences and similarities regarding sex offenders against children.
