Resumen

The mining district of Linares - La Carolina (Jaén) is characterized by having a mineralization of Pb-Ag and Cu-Fe sulfides that due to historical exploitation have generated large amounts of tailings, which are the subject of study due to the risk of leaching heavy elements to the environment. They have been studied for their high content of Fe, Pb, As and Zn. For the determination of these metals, we have performed selective extraction tests consisting of 5 steps: soluble, exchangeable, bound to carbonates, linked to sulfates and organic matter, and linked to amorphous oxides. Large contents of these metals were detected in the samples, even exceeding the thresholds for intervention, especially in the bioavailable fraction, thus representing a threat to the environment
