Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to focus on one of the wastes from the construction industry, generated by the processing of ornamental stone, and taking marble from the Macael region (Almería, Spain) as a case study. When the large blocks of marble are processed through successive cuts and treatments, a residual marble sludge is produced, mainly composed of water, the marble itself and traces of some contaminants from the machinery. A large amount of the water in this sludge is recovered for reuse in the same processing plant, and the already thicker sludge is deposited as inert material in large ponds located in the bordering production areas.
