Geovisualization deals with exploration, analysis, synthesis and presentation of geospatial data. This paper presents the development of our software prototype for realistic geovisualization (i.e.: simulation of geographical data with maximum realism) written in C++. At the moment, the prototype is able to realistically represent terrains of any dimension, taking a heights array as starting point. It is also possible to control both the point of view and the camera parameters (zoom, pitch, yaw…). We would like to remark that the simulation is generated interactively using graphics hardware, with frame rates over 24 fps (we have observed more than 60 fps in some cases, depending on the terrain size). The prototype allows the use of image textures from different sources (procedurally generated, satellite images…) to increase the expressivity of the simulation. These images are stored separately in standard image files. The user interface is flexible enough to help users work with the application. Our future plans include the generation of atmospheric effects and the combination with GIS systems.
