Abstract

This paper presents a new geothermometer based on Mg partitioning between amphibole and melt in alkaline igneous systems. The fitted expression, which determines temperatures with an error of ± 35 °C (compositional data = 89; adjusted R2 = 0.7710), is: °C where , and is the cationic fraction of component i in the A phase, calculated according to the procedure described in Table 1 of Putirka (2008, Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry, 69: 61-111). Temperature estimates in Gran Canaria volcanic rocks are consistent with other geothermometers reported in the literature.
