Resum

The outermost part of the fold-and-thrust belt in the western Subbetics, which defines the limit with the Guadalquivir foreland basin, corresponds to the here defined Algodonales-Badolatosa shear zone (ABSZ). This is a more than 90 km long, ENE-WSW trending, dextral transpressive shear zone, mainly affecting Triassic units defined by dam- to hm scale blocks of competent rocks embedded in a gypsum-rich, argillaceous plastic matrix. Geomorphological results suggest that transpressional deformation produced a very recent uplift of the Triassic units with respect to the surrounding units located to the north and to the south, thus controlling the relief evolution of the area.
