Abstract

This article analyzes the biological well-being of male populations in Mediterranean Spain during the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship based on the case of the Valencian Community. The statistic data of 124,284 young men born between 1900 and 1954 from ten municipalities and infant mortality rates constitute the biosanitary indicators for their study. Taken together, the results reveal that the Valencian child and adolescent populations received the impact of the Civil War and the post-war period. Anthropometric data shows that the trend of intergenerational male stature in the early 20th century slowed markedly among generations who grew up in the context of strife and autarky. The local series are symptomatic, showing the magnitude and territorial diversity of the problem. The deterioration of nutritional status was more evident in industrial cities, even affecting dynamic rural areas, specialized in intensive agriculture. In other populations the impact was imperceptible. Although the infant mortality rate decreased in the 1940s due to medical and health advances, height data shows that young men born in the 1930s and 1940s grew, yes, but not with the desired intensity.
