Abstract

The eight available editions of the Spanish National Health Survey (ENSE, 1987-2011) are used to analyze cohort trends and socioeconomic determinants with respect to three indicators of health and living standards: the net nutritional status (based on height), chronic cardiovascular conditions (CCCs) and disability. The results reveal a strong inter-generational contrast in the net nutritional status that is mediated by an individual’s socioeconomic status (SES). SES-related differences persist across cohorts, and they are larger among males, while SES-related differentials in disability levels and CCCs are more meaningful among females. Younger cohorts of Spaniards display a higher prevalence of CCCs, likely as a result of lifestyle changes, but not consistent trends are found in disability levels. The SES gradient appears as the most important mediator of the observed health outcomes.
