Abstract

The calcareous nannoplankton assemblages of two stratigraphic sections from Iower and middle Miocene in the Interna! Zones of the Betic Cordillera are studied. The zones of Discoaster druggii (CN-1c), Sphenolithus heteromorphus (CN-4) and Discoaster exilis (CN-5) are determined. The ages of these zones are lower Burdigalian, upper Langhian-lowermost Serravallian, and Iower Serravallian respectively. The first occurrences and distribution of some calcareous nannoplankton species are calibrated with x:egard to the most signficative events in the planktonic foraminifera scale, and most representative species are illustrated. Coccolithus radiatus Kamptner is transferred into the genus Calcidiscus Kamptner.
