Abstract

The San Pedro de Alcántara Formation is the first transgressive deposit on the Interna! Zones of the Betic Cordillera in the Marbella-Estepona area. It contains calcareous nannoplankton associations which belong to the NN2 Zone of the Lower Burdigalian. It mainly comprises conglomerates and breccias of alpujarride and malaguide provenance which were deposited in marine environments, in unstable and active synsedimentary tectonic settings. This occurrence confirms the preburdigalian nappe structuration of the Internal Zones. This formation was overthrusted, after its deposition, by the Complex of the Campo de Gibraltar, and then tectonized along strike-slip faults.
