Abstract

The Convention No. 189 and the Recommendation No.201 of 2011, on domestic workers, provide an international framework for the protection of basic labour and social security rights, unprecedented, for a sector of employment whose rights and guarantees have been placed behind the lines of recognized rights to workers in many labour sectors. With the adoption of this international standard, it’s trying to correct the protective deficiencies of a traditionally undervalued and invisible work, principally done by women, and mostly, by migrant women. Starting from the evolution and the way that from a historical perspective has experienced the protection of these workers in the framework of the ILO, this paper analyses the main premises of labour and social protection of this Convention, also reflecting on the state of ratification of the same by the ILO member States.
