Abstract

In the sphere of the social sciences, debate has been held concerning the suitability or not of conceiving as racism the anti-immigration culturalist proposals of the New Right. To clarify and settle this debate, the reasons posed are assessed and more or less narrow or broad conceptions on racism are questioned. A restricted conception of racism is argued for. The racist discourses would be comprised of a series of explicative mechanisms put into play (naturalization, reification hierarchization, determination, stereotyping, etc.) articulated around the notion of race. Whereas the first are common to different ideologies prior to racism, the racial categorization of populations would be the distinctive element of the racist ideology.
