Abstract
Training in hypoxia or altitude, characterized by a decrease in the oxygen available to the organism, produces certain physiological responses and adaptations that improve sports performance. The main beneficial adaptations generated by altitude training are the improvement in body composition, an increase in the capacity of effort for improvements in lactate thresholds, hematological improvements such as an increase in the amount of hemoglobin or hematocrit, as well as an increase in the supply of ATP. Approaching the responses and adaptations produced by height training in the respiratory system, it has been observed that exposure to hypoxia situations results in an increase in ventilatory response, changes in pulmonary gas exchange, increased workload of muscles involved in breathing or a decrease in oxygen consumption.
