Abstract
This paper seeks to discuss the approach to word formation in the school grammars published by the Spanish Royal Academy of Language between 1857 and 1949, based on a corpus from Epítomes and Compendios, two textbooks aimed at primary and secondary school teaching, respectively. In addition, several editions of the Royal Academy´s Grammar (first published in 1771) are analysed to see how word formation contents are adapted to be included in the Academy´s minor works´ for educational purposes. The analysis is expected to shed light on such aspects as the role of grammar in the regulations issued from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth century, the teaching of word formation in schools and the concept of didactic transposition.
