Abstract

The term tourism competitiveness has not been used traditionally as an instrument to evaluate a tourist destination, though, is basic to know exactly the situation with regard to its main competitors. However, at present, due to saturation levels experienced by many tourist destinations, the search for competitiveness has become one of the main pillars on which to base policies for tourism development. It has gone from a market in which prices were racing through a more complex one which incorporates other elements such as regulation, safety, health or environment, which are fundamental to the competitiveness of destinations. In this sense, the aim of this paper is to analyze the tourism competitiveness in Mediterranean coastal countries and the various factors that explain the different levels reached by these.
