Abstract

In 1554, some four years after the well known argument between musicians Nicola Vicentino and Vicente Lusitano, L'antica musica ridotta alla moderna prattica was published in Rome. In this work, Vicentino not only explained his theories about Greek music and suggested the creation of new musical instruments but he also explained his view against the decision taken by the judges in that occasion. In the following essay we will analyse the highlighted capital letter that is placed at the beginning of this work and we will try to related it to Vicentino's state of mind. As we will be able to prove, through the killing of Marsyas by the hands of Apollo and its representation through the already mentioned capital letter, the Italian academic makes a reference to the judges' unfair decision and the consequent attacks he suffered from his colleagues.
