Resumen

The aim of this study has been to develop a protocol to train and to evaluate the verbal communication; as well as to evaluate the compared effectiveness of the training to speech in university students. Two groups of students with a high fear to speak in public were selected. Half of the students were assigned to the experimental group (GE) that received the treatment and the other half to the group control (GC) that did not receive treatment. Both groups were evaluated before (pre), and after (post) the treatment, as well as in the follow-up (a month after). To this end we used an Impromptu Speech Task (Beidel, Turner, Jacob and Cooley, 1989). It is a brief task that allows to assess the verbal communication in a precise way by means of the use of a rubric or evaluation scale. The obtained results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the training to speech and the adjustment of the procedure of evaluation of this competence. The verbal ability was better in the experimental group that in the control one. This difference also stayed in the followup. The procedure developed in this study for training and evaluating verbal communication is a brief one that could be useful in all those university studies that contemplate the verbal ability as a basic competence
