Abstract

In this doctoral dissertation, an alternative methodology to calculate a new Tourist Competitiveness Index is proposed and this is compared with the official index currently prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Differences have been found in the ranking of countries, allowing the main weaknesses of each country to be detected, so that the policymakers and destination management can develop specific actions to improve tourism competitiveness. In addition, the worth of the weightings of the pillars to calculate the Tourist Competitiveness Index is studied, analyzing whether the different stages of development of the regions could give rise to different weights, as well as which countries are most benefited in the ranking in each of the scenarios. Finally, the relationship between tourism competitiveness and sustainability along with other tourism magnitudes is analyzed, comparing this relationship between different geographic regions.
