Zusammenfassung

The aim of this article is to help to reduce the terminological confusion about the concept of flexibility. Based on the information obtained in a bibliographical review on this physical ability found in the foremost databases on this topic, we are offering a classification of the specific studies based on the different terms used as synonyms of flexibility and the different meanings or shades of meanings according to various authors. Moreover we will address the concepts and shades of meanings of a series of terms very closely related to flexibility because they refer to the different properties of the tissues and elements of the locomotor system that influence, directly or indirectly, the manifestations of flexibility. We conclude that the complexity and dynamism of this physical fundamental ability makes it elusive to define as a concept and we advocate for a clear and direct approximation that considers flexibility as the ability to execute wide range movements.
