Abstract

Clay minerals have been widely used throughout history for therapeutic purposes due to their particular physical and physico-chemical properties. Current pharmacopoeias include the use of these materials, which in the pharmaceutical industry are used as excipients, as support for the controlled release of drugs and even as an active principle. The use of clay minerals in the formulation of drugs requires control, including toxicological, chemical and physical requirements. This article describes some of these requirements and describes the uses of the most common clay minerals (kaolinite, talc, montmorillonite, saponite and sepiolite) in the formulation of medicines. In addition, two easy laboratory practices are proposed for pre-university students
