Abstract

A new biostratigraphy and cartography of the Cretaceous rocks croping in the Bedmar-Cuadros valley (Jaén province) is presented. On the basis of these new data, the levels of amalgamated sandstones intercalated in marls and marlstones alternations, that were assigned to the Neogene by Alvaro et al. (1991) are here dated as early Cretaceous. Also, a set of conglomerate beds, that was systhematically assigned by all preceding authors to the Neogene, are dated by us as Cretaceous. The biostratigraphic study presented in this contribution is based mainly on nannofossils and ammonites, but some foraminifera (planktonic and benthonic) have been also studied. Five important hiatuses have been detected in the Lower Cretaceous of the area, which are precisely dated.
