Abstract
The assessment of the ancient road N-322, connecting Linares and the Linares-Baeza station (Jaén), has been carried out by means of geophysical prospecting techniques, i.e. ground penetrating radar (GPR). Landslides affecting the Upper Miocene marls are the source of the existing pathologies in this road. Antennas with 250 MHz and 800 MHz frequencies were used, directly on the wearing course. Marly facies rapidly attenuate the signal of electromagnetic waves, so this technique has provided information just for the first two meters of the subsoil. Despite this limited penetration depth, it should be noted the precision and detail provided by the method. Thus, it provides information about thickness, quality and continuity of the various layers of the pavement. In addition, several overlapping repair phases of the cumulative deformations can be identified in this linear work. Therefore, GPR allows us to know the current status and history of the structure, which makes this technique a magnificent tool of prospecting in linear works.
