Resumen

Advances in social anxiety disorder in the young. The role of expressed emotion. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is highly prevalent in children and adolescents, with severe negative consequences in the social, emotional, and behavioral development unless detected and treated. Risk factors include parental rearing and communication skills, with expressed emotion (EE) as a key indicator of family environment. Parents with high levels of EE exhibit emotional overinvolvement, criticism, and hostility. Consistent with other mental health disorders, parents’ high levels of EE are associated with poor treatment outcome in their children. However, the inclusion of parent training in high EE parents has shown to palliate this effect: children benefit from treatment as much as those with parents with low EE. These data reveal the need of assessing EE when treating children with SAD. As a consequence, it was crucial to develop a brief EE self-report measure. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art social anxiety disorder in young, and describes the new Expressed Emotion Interview in Social Anxiety Disorder self-report.
