Abstract

Inquiry Based Learning raises students’ interest in science, increases opportunities for meaningful, situated and transferable science learning and promotes the development of competences. However, one of the barriers for a wider uptake of this pedagogy is the lack of appropriate resources, which can be easily integrated in daily teaching. This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of a classroom activity developed within a European Project, aimed at improving science learning through the use of inquiry methods. The activity increases students’ interest and engagement in science learning and offers opportunities for the development of process skills. The analysis of students’ pre and post-test answers reveals conceptual change and the potential of this activity to promote meaningful learning about the thermal properties of common materials.
