Resum

In this study we relate three concepts that may have a significant role such as triggers of the gender violence: distorted thoughts, emotional intelligence and culture of honor. We considered that these three concepts would be related in an inverse way. Thus, we expected that a great importance given to culture of the honor would involve larger distorted thoughts about women and the use of the violence and also a smaller level of Emotional Intelligence and the way around for low scores in culture of honor. To determine this relationship 135 males (45 prisoners for violence of gender, 45 institutionalized prisoners for other criminal offenses and 45 not prisoners), mean age= 36.56; Sd= 10.32. Results show that there was not a significant relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Distortions referring to the woman and to the use of the violence. However, a significant relationship was found between distorted thoughts and culture of honor, depending on the group. Specifically, we obtain that non prisoners men consider and accept violence as a legitimate way of solving problems when an offense by contrast with prisoner men, who blame women of any situation of physical abuse in the couple.
