Résumé
The present paper addresses the concepts of Arielism and Calibanism as exposed, respectively, by José Enrique Rodó y Roberto Fernández Retamar. Both concepts have constituted themselves in symbols of two different ways of understanding Latin Americanism and the function that the intellectual must fulfil in this domain. All these facts are analysed here.
