Resumo

Our first purpose in this paper is to analyse the formation process of Special Needs Education as a scientific subject from a multidimensional perspective which endows it with a cross-curricular character, as a concept that makes reference to the findings of different subjects with which it constructs its knowledge collaboratively. Then, we tackle the epistemological justification of Special Needs Education on the understanding that this subject has both theoretical and practical interests, related to the teaching of students with special educational needs, which allows considering it as an applied science, as a science concerned with a human practical activity in order to take action and, as far as possible, to improve it by creating and generating knowledge from the study and the research of its own formal object.
