Abstract

There is a close interrelation between the sleep processes and the general state of physical and mental health of the people. In the present work some of the main lines of investigation that focus on the relationships between sleep and quality of life are addressied. The influence of the different sleep patterns (short, intermediate and long) and of the sleep quality (efficient/ no efficient sleep) on health and quality of life is analysed. Consequences on health of certain sleep modifications quite common in our actual lifestyle, such as sleep deprivation or working in shiftwork systems or night work, and of some of the most important sleep disorders as insomnia or apnea, are examined. Doubtless, sleep is an excellent indicator of peoples health state both in clinical samples and in the general population. The development of preventive strategies and interventions that diminish sleep alterations will turn out in a better quality of life.
