Abstract

Relationships between antlers, jaws and ages in Sierra Morena red deer. A correlation study is carried out involving some dimensions of the skeleton, antlers and the age of deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) from eastern Sierra Morena, bringing a preliminary information on the general conformation of antlers in this area. Frontal apofisis, jaws and antlers of 135 deer hunted between 1993 and 1997 were used. Age ranged between 18 and 149 months, and was estimated using histological preparations of the first lower molar (M1). Results show a high correlation between jaw length measurements, frontal apofisis height and antlers, being significant the correlation with age. Correlation between left and right antlers were signifcant, but stronger for thickness than for length measurements.
