Abstract

Throughout the history of Linguistics, the verbal copula has been analysed from different viewpoints. Some approaches considered the copula simply as an ordinary verb, without any special features. Other ones, on the contrary, have been pinpointed that the copula is an outstanding grammatical unit. Due to this, we can find the traditional use of the term substantive verb, the theory of the copula as the unique real verb and, in the last century, the copula support theory.
