Résumé
The aim of this paper is to analyze the hadith (tradition of the Prophet Muhammad) on the couple of Mugīth and Barīra (7th century) as a precedent and legal basis for divorce at the behest of Muslim women and its repercussion. Barīra was a slave married to another slave, Mugīth, who after getting her manumission with the help of another woman (‛Ā'iša, wife of the Prophet), enjoyed the possibility, sanctioned by the Prophet, to choose between continuing with her husband or separate from him. She chose to separate from him even though Mugīth followed her throughout the city crying and awakening the compassion of others.
