Résumé

Abstract: Objetive: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a pelvic floor training programme performed during pregnancy on perineal trauma. Study design: Nulliparous women from 3 Primary Health Centers in Sevilla participated in this single- blind, randomized, controlled trial. Women in the experimental group were taught a pelvic floor training programme and were asked to perform it daily from the 32nd week of pregnancy until delivery. Results: There were differences between intervention group (n=109) and control group (n=212) with respect to tears, episiotomy and perineal pain. Women in the intervention group received an episiotomy less (75,46%), lower grade of tears and perineal pain than control group. Performing the programme daily increases the probability of having an intact perineum on delivery. Conclusions: The antenatal pelvic floor training programme prevents episiotomy, tears and postnatal pain in nulliparous women and does not impact on perinatal outcomes.
