This research had as objectives to determine what are the difficulties presented by the students of La Salle University, programs Business Administration and Public Accounting, in the writing of Spanish, in order to propose strategies that mitigate such difficulties. The research has an exploratory character and it is developed from a qualitative approach. Three instruments were used to collect the information: questionnaire, in-depth interview and analysis of written productions. The results show that many failures in the written composition process have to do with the sociodemographic conditions of the students, the type of education they access, the strategies of teaching and learning the language in previous levels of education, and the wrong conception of writing teaching in higher education. Finally, we propose the emphasis in teaching academic writing with predominance of the argumentative genre
