Abstract

In this thesis we use the concept of replacement network as a conceptual framework for the study of plant-plant interactions and their role in the structure and dynamics of the community. The study of these networks, and the plant-plant interactions that configure them, can help us to improve our knowledge on the stability and dynamics of a community, as well as their assembly mechanisms, with the aim of understanding the coexistence of species and the maintenance of the biodiversity in Mediterranean forest ecosystems. Nowadays this is a critical objective because of the urgency of preserving these communities threatened by global change. The four chapters of the thesis describe different theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects related to replacement networks sampled in 12 mixed pine-oak forests in southern Spain.
