Abstract

This doctoral dissertation studies musical life at Córdoba Cathedral during the 18th century and its urban projection in the context of the period, with particular attention to the time in which the composers Agustín Contreras (1706-1751) and Juan Manuel Gaitán Arteaga (1751-1780) were chapelmasters. The research reveals the cultural and economic preeminence of the Cathedral with respect to other institutions of the city. The transcription and analysis of works by Contreras and Gaitán show a change of style in the music performed at the Cathedral between the first and second half of the 18th century, coinciding with the change of chapelmaster. The dissertation has two volumes. Volume I: Study, in five chapters; and Volume II that has five Appendices : 1) Catalog of the works by Agustín Contreras; 2) Catalog of the works by Manuel Gaitán; 3) Edition of four representative works by Contreras and three works by Gaitán; 4) Transcription of a selection of 152 documents organized by topic; and 5) Biographies, based on unpublished archival research, of the 135 musicians who worked at Córdoba Cathedral during the 18th century.
