Abstract

The promotion of citizen participation is a strategy for social inclusion developed as part of numerous public policies in order to achieve the integration of vulnerable groups. In post-industrial societies older people in lower socioeconomic levels is a group at risk of social exclusion. From a mixed methodological approach, in this doctoral thesis has been anaized the repercussions of socioeconomic inequality on the access and exercise of the right to participation for the elderly. Likewise, we have studied the effects on equality of opportunities for the elderly, as well as the areas and aspects in which these inequalities occur. Finally, it has been proposed to improve the situations of socioeconomic inequality among the elderly, besides of encourageing citizen participation and improving their channels.
