The thesis analyzes the property structure of the mechanizable traditional olive grove of the province of Jaén to assess the extra costs that smallholders have to bear relative to larger farms. In a low profitability crop, as the traditional olive grove, results demonstrate that it is necessary to face a long-term agrarian reform to increase the smallholders profitability. Among the management strategies proposed, the thesis focuses on the farmers’ cooperation throughout shared and assisted cultivation and / or, in specific areas with homogeneous characteristics, land consolidation processes. All the analyses are based on the use of the gis tools that allowed characterizing the olive orchard and project how the different strategies would benefit the sustaibability of the traditional olive grove of the province of Jaén.
