Abstract

One of the fundamental aspects of that of the conducting of musical ensembles that belongs to the musical ontology is the coherence and clarity of the gesture carried out in the musical performance. Interviews show that the study of the beat patterns is a constant in the training of the conducting technique. As long as their musical use is relevant to the music and the musicians to be conducted, Brock McElheran's beat patterns and one of Sergiu Celibidache's receptions are model cases of gestural clarity, both for their internal coherence and for the reasoning behind their use, as well as for the result of their logical and empirical analysis. In this respect, the most striking element is that one of the parameters of gestural clarity also has an optometric foundation, which completely changes the meaning of academic teaching by providing an objective criterion in the evaluation of beat patterns.
