Abstract

Objective: To analyse the relationship between cultural factors and subjective burden in primary caregivers of elderly relatives (PCER). Methodology: A cross sectional study by interviewing a random sample of 208 PCER in the Health District of North-Jaén. Variables: cultural factors (age, gender, kinship, common residence, social support and socio-cultural motives for caregiving) and objective burden (intensity and care recipient’s needs). Results and conclusions: The profile of the CFFMD (59 years, 85.1% women, 60.1% of daughters) is similar to the IMSERSO 2004 survey. The percentage of subjective burden (46.2%) is higher than in other Spanish studies with similar samples, and lower than those specific in dementias. This study supports that perceived social support and reciprocity are protective factors of subjective burden (statistical association controlling for objective burden, p <0.05, r2 of both variables: 28.3%).
