Abstract

In Latin America and the Caribbean, tourism is a consolidated activity, whose growth and high dynamism have made it one of the most remarkable economic and social phenomena of the past century. Indeed, international financial institutions have financed the launching of a large number of tourism projects in the region aimed at achieving their goals of poverty reduction and quality of life improvement in the least developed countries. The objective of this research is to assess the role played by international financial institutions in the financing of tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is shown that these organizations make significant errors in their treatment of tourism financing, which make it difficult for them to realize the full potential of this economic activity to achieve their goals. In addition, this financing does not respond to a strategic approach to financial inclusion, so it will hardly serve to transform tourism into an instrument of sustainable development.
