Resumo

Aims: analyze possible variations in blood plasma levels of GLP-1 and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) activity in male and female patients with metabolic syndrome. Design: descriptive transversal study. The population was divided into two groups between the ages of 50 and 65: one group diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and a second group unaffected by the syndrome. Results: Postprandial levels of GLP-1 were higher among men with metabolic syndrome than among women with the syndrome. In contrast, women who did not suffer from metabolic syndrome presented higher levels than men.Patients of both genders diagnosed with metabolic syndrome presented lower average DPP4 activity levels compared with patients unaffected by the syndrome. Conclusions: there were differences in GLP-1 levels for men and women unaffected by metabolic syndrome; differences in the behavior of this peptide and DPP4 activity were identified in males and females diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Decreased plasma activity might be related to higher central obesity, greater cardiovascular risk factors, and unhealthy nutritional habits.
