Abstract

The high prevalence of COPD and its increasing rate of mortality are reasons for the condition to be considered of special importance. Although it is a condition treated with pharmacological remedies, no treatment has succeeded in modifying the disease, resulting in lung transplantation as the final appeal to the progressive deterioration. We conducted a retrospective study with the objective to analyze the survival rate of transplant patients diagnosed with COPD in our series and to identify the mortality risk factors associated with lung transplants. The long-term survival of our program is lower than that of other major international series, due primarily to a higher average age of our group of patients when compared to other groups. The variables associated with and increased mortality risks are those that reflect the occurrence of an intraoperative or postoperative complication.
