Abstract

In Spain, following its accession to the European Landscape Convention (ELC) in 2007, commissions by autonomous communities for landscape studies prompted their development. Although these studies are all linked by a shared basis on the ELC's broadly defined definition of the landscape, their methods diverge considerably. Among these methods, we particularly note those used in Aragon based on their superior approach to visual analysis. The landscape mapping used in Mexico's territorial planning is based on geosystems criteria. Of the maps of the geophysical landscape used, those that are rooted in the Russian school are highly regarded. These methods, however, do not include visual aspects of the landscape, although the state's environmental law refers to the visual landscape. This project entails the application of the Aragon methodology in Mexico, in the Chiquito River Basin (Morelia, Michoacan). For Spain, conversely, methods developed in the mapping of Mexico can be applied in Spain, and in the Rio Martin Cultural Park in particular. The objective is to enrich the landscape approachers in both regions and, ultimately, advance a methodology that integrates both cartographies.
