Abstract

The main objective of this thesis is to review the treatment of grammatical and lexical prefixes and prefixation procedure in Spanish from a historical perspective. We studied an extensive list of Spanish grammars and dictionaries published during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, belonging to both the academic and non-current to the academic tradition. Our purpose is focused on reviewing the treatment of prefixes in the texts that make up our corpus under study, pay special attention to the grammatical categories assigned to them. This research may provide a deeper understanding of the treatment of prefixes, mainly on two aspects: the place of the preset in the texts studied and the grammatical category assigned to prefixes. Specifically, our study will shed light on the historical development of two boundary problems: (i) the preset as word formation process assigned to the derivation or composition and (ii) the status of prefixes front of prepositions.
