Abstract

This dissertation is a historical reconstruction of the set of processes and social, political, economic, demographic and cultural transformations that affect the inhabitants of the city of Segovia from 1860 to 1930. The ultimate goal that presides over the project is applied to the study of the city the techniques and methods of a urban history which has been gradually influenced by the historical sociology, cultural anthropology, micro-history and the thematic fields discovered by the new cultural history and the history of everyday life, which have demonstrated their explanatory ability with excellent results. The choice as an object of study is that cities are appropriate areas to analyze the phenomenon that characterized Spanish contemporary: the advent of the masses and of their new social behavior, propitious places for the emergence of the mass society, allowing us to explain the way in which social groups who occupied that space is articulated as well as the description and understanding of the meaning of behaviors that strengthen these relationships or sought to challenge them. The cities became true protagonists in the gestation of the contemporary society where all changes had their origin: social promotion, consumption, leisure, political parties, trade unionism, new inventions like the railway, tram, phone, etc., in short, was the cradle of incipient social behaviors. In this sense, these medium-size cities studies allow the development of an urban history of Segovia as the already appeared in other Spanish cities, show the model of urban growth and help reconstruct more accurately the historical process of formation of the contemporary Spain. This research addresses the location and distribution of the city of Segovia, according to its morphological and urban reality. The first part focuses on the description of the characteristics of the city and the main problems that beset it. The second, the various urban development plans or projects for the improvement and conservation of the city deposited in an openness via the railway or the Academy of artillery which never arrived, demonstrating the limited means who had these cities of middle size to solve the problems by themselves...
