Abstract

This dissertation consists of the study and analysis of the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala (1613) by Pedro de San Buenaventura. The dictionary chosen is a bidirectional lexicographical work, that is, a bilingual lexicographical product in which the Spanish and Tagalog languages coexist. It should be noted that the object of study is framed in the colonial period of the Spanish Crown and was written in the Philippines. With regard to the preparation of the dictionary, the lexicographer took seven years to write his work, a period that coincides with his missionary work in different areas of the Philippines. Therefore, the work shows a great linguistic and cultural diversity, typical of the time and the Philippine context in which it was written. This thesis offers an original study of lexicographical practice in relation to the social, cultural and political context of the time.
