Estudio y edición crítica del libro primero de las epístolas familiares (1539) de fray Antonio de Guevara

Abstract

The research I am presenting as a doctoral thesis focuses on the study and critical edition of the Libro primero de las epístolas familiares (1539) by Fray Antonio de Guevara. The results offered aim at approaching the complexity of the work through, on the one hand, the treatment of the historical and literary context in which the Epistolas familiares were conceived and, on the other hand, the study of the textual transmission through the analysis of the textual variations that document the testimonies during the author's lifetime. Thus, the main objectives I have pursued are the contextualisation of the work through a philological analysis that places it within studies of Renaissance epistolography and those relating to the socio-political development of the Hispanic monarchy in the time of Charles V, a study of the textual transmission of the first volume of the epistle, in order to establish the stemma that reflects the filiation between the testimonies during the author's lifetime, and the preparation of a critical edition of the text in order to offer it to the public, with an annotation based on the analysis of the recipients of the epistle, the content of the letter and its thematic link with the author's literary production and humanist culture.
