Abstract
This doctoral thesis presents a compendium of publications that examines 106 doctoral theses on teaching Spanish as a foreign language to Chinese speakers (SinoE/LE). These theses were defended between 2000 and 2022, primarily in Spain. The research employs an innovative methodology in the field of E/LE and focuses on key works and concepts that underpin the specialty. These works and concepts emerged in the international context between 1996 and 2010, around the “Chinese learner” notion. The review identifies significant and widespread bibliographic and conceptual gaps in research in this field, which advocates for greater attention to the global theoretical framework from which it derives. This is regardless of the study area from which the studies are approached. Additionally, the research recommends adopting systematic review as a research methodology in the field of E/LE, along with its inclusion in Applied Linguistics and E/LE Teaching training programs. Moreover, the thesis highlights the utility of specific computer tools, such as the EPPI-Reviewer platform, for conducting comprehensive, rigorous, and objective systematic reviews.
