Abstract

The iconographic repertoires associated with the Sepulchral Chamber of Piquía (Arjona, Jaén) are analyzed in this article. Dating from the first half ot the 1st century bC, the iconographic themes displayed in the different supports show the complexity of a long historical period characterized by the aftermaths of the Second Punic War and the Roman conquest. In this sepulchral chamber, we identify the development of a complex mythological narration focused on tradition. This narration ies established through the dialogue of the material assemblage and the display of iconographic programs that claim or reproduce the Iberian memory and identity. This narration is qualified and/or complemented, in addition, by those Roman materials, generating a dialectic relationship between th concepts of «Iberian» and «Roman». The identified iconographic themes, which seek to underline and emphasize the family and aristocratic history through the great Iberian paradigms, are shown as essential, dynamic expressions of discourses that go beyond materiality, relating the agency of the conqueror with the iconographic tradition and Iberian social practices.
